The Heritage Foundation

XHTML & CSS Cutup from PSD file / Prep for third-party content management (Convio)

Oh, the Heritage Foundation. This was a very interesting project from a cutup and code perspective. I’ll keep my opinions to myself about how I feel about them on a moral level.

Back to business, this was a very complicated job. The code had to be optimized for Convio, a rather specialized CMS that doesn’t quite have its head wrapped around modern codewriting practices. The homepage needed lots of room for time-sensitive updates and an AJAX/JavaScript powered Media Center to help users quickly get to hot-button content. There were loads of images and copy, and with that amount of information a logical navigational structure was critical to the success of the site.

All things considered, the cutup and code of the homepage and the first secondary page were completed in just 2 days, with additional pages built as needed until Convio took over the project. They have since changed large portions of the code greatly, using out-of-date techniques to achieve things that would be simple with basic CSS knowledge. Still, the majority of the code is still mine and can be seen at http://www.myheritage.org/.
